Economic issues caused 1 in 5 Americans to skip health care

According to HealthLeadersMedia (http://www.healthleadersmedia.com/content/FIN-254816/1-in-5-Skip-Medical-Care-Study-Says), one in five Americans did not seek medical care for a recent illness or injury, with four out of 10 citing cost as the primary factor, according to a Deloitte Center for Health Solutions online survey of more than 4,000 adults.

The survey also showed a declining number of consumers reporting to have visited a physician or healthcare professional in the past year; 79% of respondents sought medical attention in 2010 as compared with 85% who did so in 2009.

Health system uses eICU to reduce VAP 

An article in HealthLeaders Media discusses the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) efforts to reduce ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), which is among the most-acquired conditions by ventilated ICU patients. In an attempt to reduce VAP, UPenn Health System (UPHS) in Philadelphia uses telemedicine—through a preexisting electronic ICU (eICU)—to monitor patients, resulting in cost savings of more than $138,000 across two years.
