Electronic Health Record use is on the rise

In 2011, 57% of office based physicians reported using electronic health records, up from 51% in 2010, according to a National Center for Health Statistics report.

The data for the report was gathered from 2010 and 2011 mail surveys of physicians in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey.  Other key findings include:

  • Use of EHR varied by state, from 40% in Louisiana to 84% in North Dakota.
  • 34% of physicians reported having a system that met the criteria for a basic system, ranging by state from 16% in New Jersey to 61% in Minnesota.
  • 52% of physicians reported that they are planning to apply for meaningful use incentives, up from 41% in 2010.
