Physicians who focus on past mistakes fare better
Physicians who focus on past mistakes selected better treatment options than those who focus on past successes, according to an article in the Atlantic.
The article states that in a recent study, physicians were presented with a simulated medical emergency where a patient had suffered a heart attack. They were given a simplified patient history, and asked to choose from two emergency drug treatments within 10 seconds. For the first set of 64 patients, physicians were given their results, success or failure, and then asked to perform the exercise again under an MRI.
Doctors who performed well on the second set of patients showed high activity in their frontal lobe when treatments failed, while the doctors who performed poorly tended to activate the frontal lobe when a treatment was successful.
The researchers conclude that the better performing doctors were learning from their mistakes.
