California Hospital Compare Website may go away soon

The California Hospital Association has announced that it will be withdrawing from the California Hospital Compare website, which has been reporting California hospital quality metrics since 2004, according to Kaiser Health News. This would likely cause the website to go away.

The article states that hospitals are facing an administrative challenge, where they must report data to multiple agencies.  In addition to Hospital Compare, which is voluntary, hospitals are now required to report some metrics to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. 

Critics of the withdrawal note that some metrics, including ICU mortality, will no longer be reported in the public domain.  Since public reporting of ICU mortality, performance has improved about one percentage point per year, which equals thousands of lives.
