CDC launches initiative to reduce infections at outpatient facilities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched an initiative to reduce infections in outpatient facilities, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.

According to the article, while the rate of infections at inpatient facilities has been declining, the rate of infections at outpatient facilities is on the rise.  The article states that while inpatient facilities have rigorous practices in place to reduce and control infections, outpatient facilities are not as tightly regulated, and many lack procedures to control infections.

The CDC campaign, which is voluntary for outpatient facilities, includes several initiatives to reduce infections, including:

  • A new website aimed at patients, preventcancerinfections.org, which empowers patients to assess their risk.
  • Promoting strict adherence to hand-hygiene guidelines, sterile techniques for preparing and administering medications, and safe-injection practices.
  • A guide to prevent infections aimed at outpatient care in surgery centers, pain-management clinics and other outpatient settings.
