IOM report concludes that Health IT safety should be a priority

A new report from the Institute of Medicine, Health IT and Patient Safety, concludes that improving the safety of health information systems is essential for patient safety.

The report examined the safety of health IT systems, as well as IT systems effect on patient safety.  Key findings include:

  • Some robust IT systems are effective at reducing errors including medication errors.
  • Poorly designed IT systems can pose a hazard to patient safety.  Poor human to computer communication can lead to medication errors, diagnostic errors, and treatment delays.
  • Public and private domains must work together to improve safety in this area.

The report concludes that if appropriately used and regulated, health IT systems have the potential to improve provider performance and improve patient safety.
