Hospitals are making progress in reducing infections in ICUs

Hospitals are making progress in lowering infection rates in the ICU according to a press release by the Centers for Disease Control. 

According to the press release, implementation of CDC strategies has led to the reduced number of infections.

Key findings from the report:

• In 2010, there was a 33 percent reduction in central line-associated bloodstream infections.
• Catheter-associated urinary tract infections were reduced by 7 percent.
• Surgical site infections were down 10% in 2010.
• The number of patients developing MRSA declined 18% between 2009 – 2010.

The CDC states that although progress has been made in reducing these types of infections, work is still needed to reduce infections in dialysis and ambulatory surgery centers, and certain types of infections including Clostridium difficile.
